If you’re ready to step into the market
for a powerful DVD editing package,
Premiere Pro is for you. However, be
prepared for the price shock: Suggested
retail price is $699.
To unlock the true power, you should
also purchase Adobe’s integrated packages
(Encore DVD 1.5- $349, After Effects 6.5
Professional - $999, Audition 1.5 - $299 &
Photoshop CS2 - $599).
Before buying piece mail software
running over $2,300, consider Adobe’s more
reasonable DVD Digital Editing Suite for
$1,499. You receive each of the packages
above at a fraction of the cost.
Premiere Pro is not a program that you
will learn with ease. If you’ve committed to
buying the software, I recommend also
purchasing a good training program, such as
Adobe’s Total Training for Adobe Premiere
Pro 1.5. This training program costs an
additional $249, but comes with 17.5 hours
of hands on examples. Adobe also offers
Total Training for the rest of the Digital
Editing Suite for roughly $200 per package.
If you want to unleash the true power of
Adobe digital editing, be prepared to spend
at least $2,000 on software and education.
Summary:
When you consider that Premiere Pro
1.5 could cost more than your computer, you
should ask yourself: ‘What am I getting for
my money?’ The answer is quite simple: ‘A
lot!’ Premiere is a program that you can use
at a basic level to splice, join, and enhance
to make simple edits of home videos. It’s
also powerful enough to do amazing things
if you take the time to learn how to use all of
its features.
After a longer than expected learning
process, I found Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 to
be the most powerful DVD editor I’ve used.
The editing capabilities are top of the line,
even entering into the professional domain.
While it provides excellent integration with
Encore, Audition, After Effects and
Photoshop, without these additional
packages I became easily frustrated.
Premiere’s flexibility and power also require
heavier than typical computing resources.
Training modules such as Total
Training and other 3
rd
party vendors can
greatly decrease the learning curve, but add
to an already high price tag.
Overall, I would highly recommend
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 to advanced
(semiprofessional) video editors who are
willing to dedicate the time and cost to bring
out its true power. Beginner videographers
should explore lower cost options.
